European Market Access Landscape Analysis to Inform Investor Strategy

Identifying new opportunities for investment and expansion for a start-up with an innovative medical device.

Client Challenge

An American start-up company developed an innovative blood drawing device that could be used at home thereby having the potential to relieve pressure on phlebotomy services. They approached Visions4Health to help them gain insights into the European market access landscape with the aim of finding new market opportunities and raising further investment to fund expansion.

Our Solution

Visions4Health’s first step was to undertake a full assessment of the devices market across Europe. This was achieved through a combination of desk-based research and coordinating customer meetings across the EU with NHS, academic and private organisations.

The UK and Germany emerged as the markets with the most potential to be ‘quick adopters’ of this innovative technology. Of these two markets, the client decided to explore opportunities in the UK initially. With the focus now on the UK, Visions4Health worked with a health innovation network (formerly AHSN) to understand the level of potential future investment for our client by:

  • Determining the size of the opportunity in the UK
  • Identifying two sites for the company to generate evidence to support their CE mark dossier and generate real world data

Visions4Health then brokered a series of introductory meetings with a leading academic institution, which led to a formal partnership between the two organisations.

Outcomes

  • Within the first two months, Visions4Health had engaged with 37 customers across academic, private and NHS establishments, including pharmacy retail chains, top academic institutions, heads of service from NHS foundation trusts, private phlebotomy services providers, clinicians, CCG and PCN leaders, and professional bodies
  • The client struck a partnership deal with one of the UK’s leading academic institutions to use the device in ongoing healthcare research studies
  • Following the D-CODE rigour applied to the European market access landscape assessment, the company applied this methodology to their principal market, USA. They also undertook further strategic workshops to advise on a global strategy for their medical device
