State of the Relationship
The challenges facing healthcare today cannot be solved by any one organisation alone.
From improving patient outcomes and addressing health inequalities to accelerating innovation adoption and transforming services, progress increasingly depends on effective collaboration between the NHS, life sciences industry, HealthTech organisations, academia, charities and patient communities.
Since 2019, Visions4Health has been exploring what makes these partnerships successful, what barriers stand in the way of effective collaboration, and how organisations can build the capability needed to deliver meaningful and sustainable change.
Our State of the Relationship programme has evolved from examining perceptions of NHS-industry collaboration to analysing what high-performing partnerships actually do in practice. Through research, thought leadership and the development of practical frameworks, we are building a growing evidence base to help organisations strengthen their partnership capability and maximise the value of collaborative working.
Today, this work forms the foundation of our wider ambition:
To establish partnership maturity as a recognised strategic capability within the UK health innovation ecosystem.
2026: From Collaboration to Capability
The latest edition of State of the Relationship takes a different approach.
Rather than asking stakeholders what good partnership working looks like, we analysed examples of recognised partnership excellence to identify the common behaviours, structures and operating models that underpin successful collaboration.
The findings suggest that partnership working is evolving from a relationship-based activity into an organisational capability that can be developed, measured and strengthened.
The report introduces the concept of Partnership Maturity and explores the characteristics that distinguish the most effective, resilient and scalable partnerships.

2023: Collaborating to Address Complex System Challenges
In 2023, Visions4Health’s State of the Relationship report provided a detailed examination of the NHS-industry partnership landscape.
The research revealed strong support for collaborative working alongside persistent challenges including NHS capacity constraints, varying levels of trust, unclear engagement mechanisms and inconsistent approaches to partnership development.
The report became an important contribution to the wider conversation on how healthcare organisations can work together to address increasingly complex system challenges.
2019: Establishing the Baseline for NHS-Life Sciences Collaboration
Our first State of the Relationship report explored the realities of NHS-life sciences collaboration, identifying trust, governance, leadership and shared purpose as critical success factors. The report introduced the concept of Population Health Partnerships and set out a vision for more mature, strategic collaboration across the health system.
